Toys for Toddlers that Target Developmental Skills

Each toy is dedicated to a specific developmental skill if not multiple developmental skills. There are 5 basic developmental skills that are monitored and encouraged throughout your little one’s early years. Toddler milestones are activities your child demonstrates with the use of their developmental skills.

All toddlers develop at their specific pace and maybe advance in one area of development more than the other area. This can be due to your little one being offered more fine motor toys than large motor toys, which encouraged your little one to master the performance of their fine motor skills and ability faster.

Toddler milestones are given a time frame for your baby to master. If your toddler shows a significant delay within an area of development, communicate your concerns to your child’s provider for further assistance. Let’s explore your Toddler’s developmental milestones and skills he or she will encounter during these early years. This will also help you to choose toys that are developmentally appropriate for your toddler.

Educational Toddler Toys

Every toy has the potential to be educational for your toddler. Observe the toy and its benefits before offering it to your child. Brainstorm the basics of early learning such as observing for colors, shapes, numbers, sizing, alphabets, and images present. All are things you can verbally exercise during your child’s interaction. You will eventually observe your toddler grasping the knowledge of basic early learning skills.

Educational Play Time Toy Routine For Toddlers

Develop a designated time of at least 30 to 45 minutes daily for one-on-one educational play time learning with your toddler. Your child will have the opportunity to learn through play plus have that specific educational communication time with you. They are going to love this specific time dedicated to them. However, I use a specific method for success.

1. Organize Your Toddler Toys in Containers

Create a container for each toy set/activity. This allows the toys to be organized and readily available for your child’s educational playtime. However, offer one container at a time. This gives you the opportunity to focus on all the great benefits the specific toy has to offer.

2. Focus on Developmental Learning

Your child’s developmental skills are the main focus at this age. Continue practicing and encouraging your toddler to express and demonstrate their developmental skills. Here are the focused developmental skills you will encourage your child to explore:

  • Physical Development
  • Social /Emotional,
  • Speech/Language
  • Cognitive Development
  • Sensory

Sensory developmental play offers toddlers/children calming mechanisms and can be self-soothing. Explore different textures, and listening to sounds all play a significant role in your child’s growth and development.

Let’s use playdough as an example. Playdough is one of my daughter’s favorite sensory toys. Your child is exploring the playdough and realizes it is soft and easy to squeeze/ pull apart. At this moment your child has utilized their cognitive development and fine motor skills.

However, you are playing with your toddler and the playdough. You may have also voiced a few action verbs like push, pull, roll, or squeeze. Now your child is interacting with you and mincing what you have created (a ball). Your child has demonstrated social development by participating with you and mimicking your actions of creating the (playdough ball). Your toddlers happen to hear the word (ball) because you have been repeating the word throughout playtime. Speech and language skills are developing for your child!!!

A Ton of developmental practice and educational learning is being conducted during this dedicated play time🤍

3. Basic Early Learning

As a reminder, your toddler’s developmental skills are the initial skills to practice at this age. You are promoting your child’s developmental growth. However, if your child is not speaking as much or attempting to only produce sounds, you will want to focus more on speech and language development, also their communication skills. Then you can proceed to basic learning such as learning colors, shapes, numbers, and alphabets.

For example, focus on the letter sounds which is encouraging your child’s speech development, then the letter’s name.

First, you have physical development which breaks into two categories. Fine motor skills and large motor skills. Pushing, pulling, squeezing, opening and closing are a few examples of fine motor skills. Your child uses the muscles in their hands and wrists to encourage their fine motor development. Next, is large motor skills. Large Motor skills are performed anytime your child uses their arms, legs, and the trunk of their body in any activity. The Toddler Toy Guide gives you a selection of great toys that will target your child’s physical development!

Toddler’s Fine Motor Development Toys

Toddlers are at the age where he or she is beginning to develop muscles of the hands and wrist. In turn, these muscles will develop and make it easier for your toddler to turn, twist, open, close, push, grasp, pull, etc., objects/items. Fine motor skills your child develops will be utilized throughout their life. Your toddler will utilize this skill to develop eye-hand coordination, writing skills, and tieing of their shoes in-between ages 3 to 4. Don’t worry! Practicing fine motor development with fun, interactive toys will encourage your toddler to develop their fine motor skills and succeed in these areas. Cognitive Development

Your baby’s cognitive development is very important at this age. Cognitive development revolves around the way your toddler is using his or her little brain to think, understand, memorize and solve problems. But how can you observe these abilities within your child?

Cognitive Development is how the brain works, retains, and delivers information. Memorization, understanding, thinking and even identification are four great examples of cognitive development. Your child will remember how much fun he or she had playing on a specific toy and seek it daily. This is an example of memorizing the toy and identifying it. Your child will being to operate the toy independently as a result of problem-solving. Matching, color sorting, counting numbers, and alphabet recognition all require the use of your child’s cognitive skills.

Speech Toys For Toddlers

Speech development is sounds presented by your child’s voice that encourage your child to express words.  Language is words and gestures used by your child as communication. Toddlers’ speech and language development take time and patience. I totally understand how eager you are to hear words come out of your child’s mouth. Time, patience, and practice make progress. Your child’s speech and language skills are still developing as a toddler. It’s not typical for all two-year-olds to all have 100 words in their vocabulary. That’s because all children learn, grasp, and understand words differently. Here are some fun speech and language developmental toys you can offer your child.
